Time to Go!

I leave in the morning. It just doesn't seem possible that it's already time to go. The nervousness is finally hitting me now.

Up until this point I've been really excited- don't get me wrong I'm still really excited- but now I'm super nervous to leave. I think it's because up until now I've been able to say, "Oh I'm not leaving for a month" or "I still have a week until I leave." But now I can't say that. First thing tomorrow morning (we're leaving at 7 ugh) I'm leaving for college. Everything is loaded in my car, and all that's left to do is pack up what I have to use tonight and in the morning, put my bike on the bike rack, and we're gone.

It still doesn't seem possible.

I finally cried though. I was doing good and totally wasn't going to cry, but then my mom said this thing that she used to say when I was little and it made me cry. We had this thing where one of us would say "Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite," and then the other one would join in and say "If they do bite them back." It's kind of silly, but yah know....

I cried again standing in my room. I was packing up the last few things that I can for tonight- I hadn't really stopped crying yet from the whole bed bugs thing- and I burst out in tears again.

My sister and I share a room, so it's not like my room is completely empty, but looking around the room I couldn't believe how empty it looked. All of my pictures and posters are down off the walls and all of my stuff is taken off the shelves and dresser. It's a weird feeling knowing that tonight is the last time I'll be sleeping in my room. I mean yeah, I'll come back in the summer and on holiday and stuff, but my mom is taking my bed out (we have bunk beds- mine is the top) so now whenever I come back either me or my sister will be sleeping on the couch.

I think that's the best way to explain how I feel right now: weird. I don't really know what else sums it up. I'm excited and sad and nervous and anxious all at the same time. I'm anxious to leave, but I don't want to at the same time. I'm excited to move in, but at the same time I'm extremely nervous. (If my whole roommate thing stays the way it is right now it'll be the first time I've had my own room since my sister was born)

I have to say though... I think excitement wins out against all the other feelings. I am so excited to get out and be on my own. I'm looking forward to all the new friends I'll make and all the new things that I'm going to do.

Let's just hope I don't get too carried away....

Pens, Paint and Packing

There is less than a week until I move in to my dorm. I still can't believe that it's that close. The longest I've ever spent away from my mom is 2 weeks, so it's going to be quite a change for me. On top of that, I've never been to a school with more than 500 people (and that's in my whole school not just my class), so it's going to be a huge change going to a university. This week is going to be super crazy. On top of having to pack, I still have last minute shopping to do, and I have to sand and paint the wood for my loft.

I started the painting process today, and let me tell you:it sucks! I thought that it would be quick and easy to get it done, but it takes FOREVER! I started painting around I think 5 o'clock today, and I was painting until almost 10. And I'm only half way done! That means I still have 5 more hours worth of painting to do! I am so not looking forward to having to finish that tomorrow.

The packing process is going much better. I have almost everything packed that I'm taking with me. My mom got boxes for me from her work, so I didn't have to worry about what to use, and I have I think 3 boxes full so far. I got all of my clothes and shoes that I won't be wearing this week packed into one box, and I'm planning on just shoving the rest of them into a duffel bag or a small box Thursday night. I have all of my stuff for my dorm (minus the few last minute things that I have to get) packed up and ready to go in another box and all of the stuff that wouldn't fit into that box is shoved into another.

I really feel like I'm bringing way too much stuff. I don't know if I'm going to have enough room for all of it. I'm planning on unpacking and putting away as much of it as I can my first week and then just bring back what ever I don't have room for.

Gahh!!! I still can't believe that move in day is this Friday!!!

Speaking of moving in, since Kelsey can't go to Ferris anymore, her dad won't be coming up to help us move in. That would be fine except for he was going to help us put together our lofts. Now my mom and I have to do it ourselves. It seems simple enough, but I'm hoping that it's as easy as he made it out to be. If not, my friend Manny is just a floor below me so I can ask him for help, but I'd rather not have to.

Bail Out

My friend Kelsey and I have been planning on being roommates since we both found out we're going to Ferris. We had everything planned. We were going to build our lofts and paint them neon green and blue. We'd figured out who was bringing what, and were all set to move in next Friday. Then yesterday she found out that she didn't get as much financial aid as she thought she was going to. That meant that she either had to take out a loan or not go to Ferris.

She decided that she didn't want the burden of a loan, so now she's going to live at home and go to a community college. I understand why she made the choice that she did, and I'm not mad at her for it, but it kind of sucks for me. For one thing, she was bringing a lot of the stuff that we need for our room because she already had a lot of it. She was bringing our fridge, TV, mirror, fan, shower shelves, and had a truck to haul up the wood for our lofts. Now I have to rush around and figure out where I'm going to get all that stuff before Friday. It wouldn't be as bad if it had been a little sooner, but the fact that she found this out literally a week before we were supposed to move in sucks.

On top of not having a lot of stuff, now I also have to worry about who my roommate is going to be. It's getting down to the wire, and I'm pretty sure that most people have been matched up with their roommate for a while now, so the person that I get paired with is just going to be random. I'm kind of hoping that I just won't get a new roommate and I'll get to have the whole room to myself. That would be awesome.

Another thing that really sucks about losing her as my roommate is that she was someone that I trusted. We had already talked about looking out for each other at parties and stuff so now I don't have that either. I'm kind of nervous about not having her there for me, but one
of my guy friends from football is going to Ferris too so we're going to be party buddies.

I'm still really excited to move in on Friday. Right now I'm camping with my grandpa, so as soon as I get back the last minute dorm shopping and packing will start.

I know right now this probably isn't the most interesting stuff to read about, but I haven't even gotten to college yet. I'm sure once I get there it will get a whole lot better =D.

Getting Ready

Since I just decided to make this blog and am moving in in a week, I'm not really going to cover the whole applying to college process and all that. I know that it's a huge part of college or whatever, but I have a horrible memory so I don't think my recollection of what I went through would be the greatest. I'll just start with orientation and the dorm shopping experience...

The summer after my senior year, I had to work an internship for a program that I was in during high school. This meant working from 8-4:30 Monday through Friday for almost six weeks. In other words, I had an extremely short amount of time to get ready to move out. I did however take a day off for orientation.

I had always imagined orientation being a huge deal. Like I would go there and meet a ton of new people and start to make friends. In reality, it was very structured and I didn't really meet anyone. I got there at 8 o'clock that morning, checked in, took my picture for my ID, sat through a presentation, signed up for classes and then left. I did go to orientation the same day as my roommate, so I got to hang out with her.

I guess I should probably explain my roommate situation... Me and my friend Kelsey from school are going to be rooming together. We've been playing soccer together since we were about 6 years old, and we're going to be majoring in the same thing (Forensic Biology). It works out really well because we'll be taking a lot of the same classes so we can help each other out with stuff. I'm also really looking forward to knowing my roommate beforehand because we don't have to worry about getting along or anything.

Anyway...

Before we even went in to sign up for classes, the people at Ferris picked out certain classes for us that we couldn't change. I already had my Chemistry, Biology, and Math class taken care of, but then they made us sign up for an additional 2 classes. Once I signed up for those 2 classes, I had a total of 17 credit hours which is a ton. There is no way I am going to be able to keep up with 17 credit hours in my first semester of college, so I am definitely dropping one of my classes as soon as I can. Once I drop the class I will have 14 credit hours which I think is much more manageable than 17.

Once orientation was over, Kelsey and I started talking about our dorm. We had to sign up for a room assignment before we went to orientation, so we already knew who our suite mates were going to be and what hall we were in. The only things we had to deal with were our beds and everything else we wanted to put in our room.

We decided that we wanted to loft our beds, and we wanted them to look awesome. Instead of buying the loft kit from Ferris (which was super expensive) Kelsey's dad just went to Lowe's and bought the stuff we needed and we're going to put it together ourselves. We also got some awesome colored paint (lime green and blue) instead of just lame wood stain. We have everything figured out (like who is going to bring what) and now the only thing we have to look forward to is actually moving in.

Because of my short summer (and limited budget), I haven't really done very extensive shopping for college. Most of the things that I bought for my dorm came from Dollar General or Meijer. I think the thing that I am most excited about that I bought is my laundry hamper. That sounds really lame, but it's pretty cool. Instead of getting an actual hamper, I got this thing that's like a backpack. That way I don't have to lug a stupid hamper down to the laundry room. I can just put all my stuff I need in this, put it on my back and head down there... way easier than the other way....

Okay. So I guess I wouldn't say that's what I'm most excited about, but hey, it's pretty cool.

I've gotten almost all of my dorm shopping done. All I have left to get is a mirror, a fan, and my hair dryer and straightener. (I have a younger sister so she's going to keep the ones that I used before and I get to get new ones =] )

It's getting down to the last few days, and I'm getting pretty anxious. I can't wait to move in and get away from my annoying little sister. (she's only a year younger than me and we are total opposites so we never get along)
